As I posted on my own blog this morning, I have my very first ever job interview, which means I am getting together a list of questions to ask them.
Wow, I have a lot of questions! But that's good and shows interest, right?
I'm wondering - how much do you talk money at an initial interview? They, I assume, will give me a ballpark range of salary, which I know some negotiation will go into. But then come all of the "extras" - lab space, start-up funds, travel money, internal grant possibilities, etc etc etc.
Any thoughts?

I think that's a good question. Do you have any idea at this point what they pay range is? For my first job after college I counter-offered at the advice of my now-brother-in-law and got an extra 50 cents an hour, but that was after I was offered the job. I'm curious to hear how the money talk goes in your searches.
If this is for an academic job, money is usually only brought up by the dean (or whomever will actually make the offer). It is usually just mentioned as a range at the interview and the talking gets to the nitty gritty over the phone when an offer is made. Faculty and particular junionr faculty recent hires will most likely give you an idea of what a start up package looks like. Don't forget that it isn't all just about money--think course load, start up funds, software, mentor, office space, computers, travel funds, etc. My first job was a research univ so all of these things figured into the offer and were discussed in detail after the interview.
I'm not sure if things are different in more sciencey-sciences, but I think ScienceWoman and DrugMonkey have posted on this a bunch.
I wouldn't expect it to come up until you have a second interview, but what do I know.
