Gas Prices

I know we are all feeling these. However, I came across this graphic from the NY Times that puts the issue in striking contrast. As we've discussed before on budgeting, entertainment usually garners 5% of a person's income whereas housing can fluctuate between 15 and 30%

For my part on gas prices, I have been lucky. My car gets very good mileage, I keep my car maintained, and I am able to walk to work most days. I also do not mind slowing down on highways and enjoying the trip. I have an upcoming conference where I have decided to drive; we'll see how my gas budget fares.

How are you dealing with gas prices?

We still have our 1996 Saturn which has 105,000 makes and is in excellent condition. My husband was going to sell it, since we have a Saturn VUE SUV, but since the car gets 35 miles to the gallon, we thought it would be best to keep it. So, we only use the SUV on the weekends.

It also helps that we have one driver. I have poor eyesight and can't drive.

I don't drive that often, so I do fairly well. However, I dread the price of flights to MLA this year. I just know it will cost an obscene amount of money to get there (San Francisco) and stay there). I do not agree with the practice of requiring those with the least amount of money (grad students, adjuncts, etc) to attend these expensive affairs in order to be able to interview for jobs.
