Student discounts

We all probably get the student admission to the movies (maybe even after we're done being students!), but there are many other discounts available for students. Some interesting ones:
  • Kiki alerted me to 15% discounts students can get on cell phone service! The following link provides information on how to get discounts from the major cell phone providers.

  • Ecogeoman and I have both had success buying plane tickets, especially for international flights, on Studentuniverse.com. He recently saved several hundred dollars on a flight to Far Off Land. STAtravel is a similar service.
  • The International Student Identity Card (ISIC) can get you discounts at all sorts of places. I put my city into the discount finder and it returned deals for a whole bunch of cool stuff. It's primarily for discounts on travel related things like hostels and extra baggage, but has other deals too. It does, however, cost $22 for a year.
  • Check around for local attractions that give student discounts. For instance, symphony orchestras often sell tickets to students at reduced prices.
  • Conferences almost always have a student registration fee. But if you ask, sometimes they will let you volunteer to get your registration (partly) waived.
  • There are other crazy discounts that aren't advertised and you'll never know about if you don't ask. For example, I have a friend who got super cheap rent because his landlord wanted to help out a student.
Chime in in the comments if you have any other tips! And as always, if you'd like to write a post or have an idea you'd like posted on your behalf, let me know.

For other J.Crew junkies out there like me, they offer 10% discount to students and a 15% discount to educators. Make sure to bring student/educator ID. Only good in-store.

I didn't know that! Although I'm not sure 10% is enough for me to afford J.Crew...

That reminds me that Hancock Fabric gives a 10% (or maybe it's 20%) student discount. They sell yarn too.

American Apparel also offers a 10% in-store discount to students. Ann Taylor Loft offers an educator discount if you sign up for this program on their website. If you get a free Border's discount card and add yourself to their email list, they offer frequent coupons as well as special educator's discounts occasionally. Aside from these, my favorite sources for discounts are Ebay (clothes and shoes), Etsy (jewelry and other fun stuff), and Amazon.com marketplace for used books.

The best place I've found for listing student discounts is the little baggies that they give out to all the new undergrads. There are always coupons to the LargeU bookstore as well as local eateries.

The day planners that are sold at the LargeU bookstore are also full of coupons, often making them worth the 5 bucks even if you rely on a Palm or iCal (like I do).

Of course, this might not apply if you go to a smaller school.

We just switched our cell phones from AT&T to Verizon, but found while we were shopping around that both offered discounts for employees of my university (which I am since I'm a TA). The discounts were 15-20% before taxes. Not bad! Thanks for mentioning this so I knew to ask!
